The City of Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Constitution Park on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The event is open to children ages 12 and younger, and they can get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Please bring your device for pictures. For the egg hunt, participants will be divided into four age groups: 3 years and under, 4-5 years old, 6-8 years old, and 9-12 years old. The egg hunts will occur simultaneously but in different park sections. Participants are reminded to bring a basket or bag to collect their Easter eggs. Special prize eggs, donated by local businesses, organizations, and supporters of the annual event, will be awarded to winners within each age group. Help Support Our Downtown Businesses! – The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation has partnered with Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission to create special discount cards that offer sales and promotions at participating locations throughout Cumberland’s Downtown District.

The Cards cost $5.00 and are valid through December 31, 2024.

All of the proceeds generated by the cards will be used towards special events, promotions and initiatives to help support downtown businesses during the construction of Baltimore Street.

The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area’s scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. The AHEC West Health Insurance Program opened an outreach center in Cumberland at 138 Baltimore Street, Suite 100, called “The Possibility Shop.” Located near the Union Rescue Mission, the shop offers space for other agencies and programs to provide services to vulnerable populations they might not otherwise reach. Thirteen organizations offer 21 programs from the Shop, including the Allegany County Health Department, Horizon Goodwill, HRDC, Maryland Coalition of Families, Maryland Wellness, Mountain Laurel Medical Center, Maryland Physicians Care, Aetna Better Health, Western Maryland Food Bank, and County United Way AHEC West offers three programs at the site.

A wide range of services includes a small food pantry, clothing, hygiene supplies, outdoor gear, phones, and bottled water. Harm reduction programs offer clean needle exchange and testing for Hep C and HIV. Visitors are also provided connections to mental health services, Peer support, health insurance assistance, and other health and social services screenings. The Shop has also hosted expungement clinics to clear old criminal records.

Gilchrist Gallery Every 2nd Saturday morning of the month throughout 2023, Gilchrist Gallery will host yoga and sound healing at 9:30 am with Paula Reeves. The entrance is donation-based; attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, blanket, and water.

UPMC Western Maryland offers Chair Yoga every Monday at the Gilchrist Museum of the Arts in Cumberland at 2:30 pm. Chair yoga is also offered on scheduled days at several senior centers. Led by AHEC West, Healing Allegany is a consortium of healthcare, law enforcement, and social service agencies serving Allegany County and numerous volunteer supporters. The consortium is working to improve treatment for opioid misuse, address community and internal stigma associated with addiction, and reduce illness and death related to opioid misuse. The Allegany Arts Council – The Arts Council will begin its first moving phase with the relocation of our administrative offices on Friday, March 15, 2024. Beginning Tuesday, March 19, members and visitors wishing to speak to a member of our staff may find us at 42-48 N.   • The Imagination Generation: Mysterious Mythical Creatures. Works from area youth ages 2-18 explore the “Mysterious Mythical Creatures” theme. The Imagination Generation and the exhibition itself run from March 2-23.

  • Kids Photo Boot Camp is scheduled for Saturday, March 23. In the lead-up to our 10th Annual Allegany Photo Show. The Kids Photo Boot Camp is an immersive experience for young photographers. The workshop is scheduled from 12:00-1:30 pm. Join the Allegany Arts Council and local photographer, Michael Hunter Thompson, for a special program leading up to our 10th Annual Allegany National Photography Competition, inviting young photographers and creative explorers to try their hands at new photography techniques. During the workshop, Thompson will begin with an introduction to basic photography fundamentals before letting the kids get in on the action! Bridging with our current youth art exhibition, The Imagination Generation, students will use lights during a long photography exposure to experiment with light painting and projection screens will display mythical creature backgrounds corresponding with the current show. Understanding how time and light impacts the photographic process in this way not only taps into the student’s imagination but also teaches how cameras ultimately work. Final images will be displayed on a monitor during the ANPCE’s duration. The workshop is scheduled from 12:00PM-1:30PM. The workshop is free, but registration is required and limited to 10 participants. Students should plan to bring a camera if they have one and phone cameras count! Tennessee Williams was one of America’s greatest playwrights, penning classics like The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and our next mainstage play: The Rose Tattoo. His life’s work includes twenty-five full-length plays, five screenplays, over seventy one-act plays, hundreds of short stories, two novels, poetry, and a memoir; five plays were also made into movies.   • Saturday, April 27, Third Annual Gatsby Gala Fundraiser at the Brooke Whiting House, 632 Washington Street. Doors open at 6 pm. It’s that time again! Dress in your best 1920s outfits and re-live what a racy 1929 prohibition party was like as Brooke and Ruth Whiting guests in their 1911 home. This was Cumberland’s heyday, and the Whitings were active in everything from banking to beer brewing. Known simply as “Gatsby,” this event has become a “must-do” social gathering for all the right reasons! Surprise arrivals. Great food. An amazing setting among Brooke Whiting Jr and his sister Anne’s collections of art, books and furnishings, astutely acquired from American antiquities dealers, and during their world travels between 1948 and 1990. Murder at the Museum – Allegany Museum and Embassy Theatre announce an upcoming murder mystery event on the evenings of Thursday, April 11, Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13. Written and directed by Tom Valentine, this interactive experience in the museum ballroom features an eight-member cast mingling throughout the crowd before the performance and dropping clues. Refreshments will be available at a cash bar, and charcuterie boards will be set at each table. Attendees will be invited to guess the murderer by ballot at the end of the performance. Prizes for the winners include a Whiskey Rebellion ticket or a Triple Play theatrical event pass from the Embassy Theatre. Seating will be limited to 100 people per night.
