Then look no further than the Allegany County Animal Shelter’s “Hounds Around Town” program, allowing individuals to sign a shelter dog out for the day. The beautiful mountains of Western Maryland present an excellent opportunity for our shelter dogs to experience the joy of a long walk, hike or run in many of the area’s scenic locations. Are you looking for something more low-key? No problem. We have many pups that would enjoy an afternoon lounging on a couch, a stroll through the neighborhood, or maybe a trip for ice cream. The most important thing is giving an adoptable shelter dog a much-needed break from the kennels and providing enrichment and socialization. The Allegany Arts Council has announced the inaugural Mountain Maryland Film Festival to take place November 8-9, in partnership with Loft 129. The competition will offer $1000 in cash prizes to filmmakers submitting shorts, or films under 15 minutes in duration.
The 2024 theme for the film festival is music – in addition to the filmmaking competition, which is now accepting submissions, the two-day event will also feature the director and producer of an award-winning documentary, “Firebird: Built to Burn,” which explores the town of Phoenixville, PA, and the musical and cultural festival created two-decades ago by building, and then burning, a wooden phoenix. Colleen Brady and Charlie Hudson, both award-winning filmmakers, will join the event for a
live conversation.
On day two, popular music films including American Graffiti and Saturday Night Fever will be screened, along with a special block of shorts and an award presentation to the winning filmmakers. Following the day’s events, a late night will take place at a location to be announced.
Filmmakers interested in submitting for the competition may do so via Film Freeway, with a deadline of September 20. Tickets for the two-day festival will be available soon and can be purchased through the Arts Council’s website.
The Arts Council wishes to thank the City of Cumberland and Loft 129 for support of this program.
Cumberland Theatre – 101 N. Johnson Street, 301-759-4990. [email protected].
The Cumberland Theatre will present a stage reading of the play Confessions From the Ladies Room written by Shane Riggs as part of its CT Season Too! Series this month. The performance will take place at the theatre on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:00 pm and will also serve as a benefit for the remaining shows in the theatre’s 2024 Season. Appearing as a special guest star in this production will be Cumberland native and professional actress Rebeca Arthur.
The play centers around four actresses made famous by a fictional television show reunite years after its cancellation to plan a reunion special on a new cable network. The creator of the show hosts the reunion, where the passage of time has seen the actresses’, stars lose much of their luster. Their opinions of themselves, however, have suffered no such loss, as each faithfully grasps their celebrity, and each carefully hides a shadowy secret. So, with egos drawn and vanities flared, the women of the TV show “The Ladies Room” take their ambitions center stage. The results are wildly humorous and played out in living Technicolor.
Tickets are available online at cumberlandtheatre.com and by calling 301.759.4990.
